PSALM 45:10-17 (NIV Version)

10. Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear: Forget your people and your father’s house.
11. The king is enthralled by your beauty; honour him, for he is your lord.
12. The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift, men of wealth will seek your favour.
13. All glorious is the princess within her chamber; her gown is interwoven with gold.
14. In embroidered garments she is led to the king; her virgin companions follow her and are brought to you.
15. They are led in with joy and gladness; they enter the palace of the king.
16. Your sons will take the place of your fathers; you will make them princes throughout the land.
17. I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you forever and ever.

As we learned last week, the first half of this psalm is addressed to the king…and from verse 10, to the bride. This verse is so very beautiful as we see the bride being instructed that as she enters this new chapter in her life, she must not allow her old loyalties to compete with the new. That this new season revolves around adoration and devotion to her partner as both husband and king.

These verses stand as an important complement to Genesis 2:24 which talks about the husband breaking ties with his former home, to give himself to his wife. In the natural, entering this phase of life is so significant, and if you can do it with wisdom, it truly will set you up for life… and in this Psalm, you can see this couple seriously taking on a new orientation to the future… as parents, rather than children.

The king is totally captivated by the beauty of his bride…and the bride is instructed to honour her king. To honour – to show great resect and admiration to someone or something - is an action that shows great strength of character, and a wonderful sign of loyalty to whomever you are giving honour. Honour however, is not something that can be demanded… but is like a gift… it is given.

Martin Luther said re beauty, ’That our beauty does not consist in our own virtues, nor even in the gifts which we have received from God, by which we put forth virtues and do all those things which pertain unto the life of the law; but in this – our apprehending Christ and believing in him. Then it is that we are truly beautiful: and it is this beauty alone that Christ looks upon, and upon no other.’

‘ The daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift’… says verse 12. Tyre was a great trading centre on the Mediterranean coast, and Tyre was also world-renowned for its wealth… so it is of great significance that the heirs of Tyre would come to this kingdom and honour this new union… this new day, this glorious Kingdom.

The other wedding this Psalm represents is the wedding between Christ, the King of Kings, and His bride… the church… which is you and I. Just this thought alone fills my heart with so much joy, it is quite indescribable.

One of the main things I love about this passage is the amount of confidence in the favour of God that shines through this Psalmist.“The king’s daughter is all glorious within”… I truly love to ponder on this thought, that the revelation of being children of the King is such a powerful position in life, our heavenly pedigree is secure. And that we should lead in our manner of life, and disposition of the soul.

She is glorious inside and outside, even her clothing is of gold. But the true measure of glory goes to a realm that is not immediately seen with the natural ability of sight. It is reflected in all actions, speech, in character, in kindness, in quiet strength, in morality, the list goes on and on… such is a glorious believer.

And finally, listen to this beautiful passage about verse 14, from a very old book entitled, ’Illustrations of the Inner Life’ by Duncan McGregor

‘ The virgins, her companions shall follow her’… These are the members of the church, but the figure of a bridal train is employed to sustain the allegory (a symbolic expression of deeper meaning). What a bright train the Royal Bride shall have as she goes to meet her Bridegroom! Kings’ daughters will be there, for one day, every crowned head will bow at the foot of the cross.

Jews and Gentiles will be there – representatives of all peoples, tongues and nations. They are ‘virgins’… They keep themselves unspotted from the world. They are weaned from its idols, they dread its contaminations… They follow the Royal bride. They keep by her side in storm and sunshine. They follow her in the regeneration. They follow her in the search after her beloved. They follow her to the green pastures and the still waters… and when persecution comes, and Christ’s faithful witnesses have to prophesy clothed in sackcloth, and perhaps to pass through a baptism of blood to the crown, they follow her.

Such a picture of loyalty, commitment, faithfulness, an undivided heart… is there to instruct and inspire.

What would it take for you to leave your first love?? If nothing can ever separate us from the love of Christ… then what would it take for you to turn your back on Him? These are questions that need to be asked. I know for myself, that Christ IS my life… there is no other life but life IN HIM. Is this your confidence… knowing you are completely TAKEN by the one who formed you in your Mother’s womb? If in any way your Christian life is an option, then you seriously need to get on your knees and GIVE your life to Christ. I have no option… for HE IS MY LIFE.

And finally, (and believe me, I could stay on this Psalm forLONG TIME….) THE END OF THIS PSALMsomething I treasure…

That we are led to the King with joy and with gladness (this should be our BIRTH MARK!!!)… what is your birthmark?? What are you known for??? What is your atmosphere??and… ‘that your sons will take the place of your Fathers, you will make them princes throughout the land…..’

All those years ago, I remember the Lord showing me streams of young men and women… with a revelation of truthful worship in their core, going out throughout all the land as fine princes… teaching, leading, loving… and as I see what is happening in our midst today, God is truthful to his word… as you all, either locally or internationally, are taking your place as LEADERS in the finest and most glorious kingdom of all, the Kingdom of God.

The names of the greatest people on earth may live to a few generations… but the Name of our Jesus, this name that is so very dear to us, we will never forget, and His renown will be ever new. The fame of Messiah is not left to human guardianship… for the sovereignty of God guarantees it… age to age reveals more of Himself, as the volume of the God song continues to swell and increase… What a powerful Psalm… what a glorious Saviour…

Love you so… Darls
