PSALM 58 (New King James Version)

The Just judgement of the wicked
To the chief musician. Set to ‘ Do not destroy’. A michtam of David.

  1. Do you indeed speak righteousness, you silent ones? Do you judge uprightly, you sons of men?
  2. No, in heart you work wickedness; you weigh out the violence of your hands in the earth.
  3. The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.
  4. Their poison is like the poison of a serpent; They are like the deaf cobra that stops its ear,
  5. Which will not heed the voice of charmers, charming ever so skilfully.
  6. Break their teeth in their mouth O God! Break out the fangs of the young lions, O Lord!
  7. Let them flow away as waters which run continually; when he bends his bow, let his arrows be as cut into little pieces.
  8. Let them be like a snail which melts away as it goes, like a stillborn child of a woman, that they may not see the sun.
  9. Before your pots can feel the burning thorns, He shall take them away as with a whirlwind, as in His living and burning wrath.
  10. The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance; He shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked,
  11. So that men will say, “Surely there is a reward for the righteous; Surely He is God who judges in the earth.”
This is another of the great Psalms… a great cry against injustice. I love that the Psalmist does not allow any of us to get complacent when it comes to bringing justice… You know an unjust judge, or anyone for that matter can bring wrongful complaints against you… but God, the supreme judge… will always judge rightly.

Here David points out something very interesting...that in their hearts they were forming wicked schemes, and their hands were working out what was in their hearts… calculated ruthlessness. Do you remember what in says in Psalm 24??... ‘who may ascend my holy hill? Or who may stand in this holy place? HE WHO HAS CLEAN HANDS AND A PURE HEART…’

Hearts and hands…. always been critical to the life of the righteous…

Before anyone feels puffed up here, you’ve always got to remember where you came from… that the sin nature is at work in all of us, which is why we needed a Saviour in the first place!!

I’ll never forget the first time Amy told me a lie when she could hardly even speak. My cherub, my treasure, my perfect little long awaited daughter, the child of my heart…. told a lie!!!I asked her ‘Amy, what do you have behind your back??’ to which she replied… ‘NOTHING!’. Well of course she had lollies nicely tucked behind her back and one firmly planted in her cheek!!! So innocent… but I was surprised at how easy it was to her to say something not true. Imagine if that behaviour was never confronted by the Spirit of God, imagine if left to its own set of rules to live by….

Cute as a baby, DANGEROUS as an adult….

When injustice is dealt your way, you want to shout your defence… sometimes appropriate, but you’ll often find that true deception can only be truly removed by a work of the Spirit. For the blinkers to come off usually takes a little force!

When David here says… ’break their teeth God!!’ It sounds so harsh… but what he is saying is if he cannot convince the enemy to bring truth to light, or right the wrong… he at least wants to deprive them of their ability for evil!! A true warrior…

David continues to speak right over every wrong that the enemy tries to throw his way, which really does cause a giant to be born within David… nothing like a bit of persecution to bring out what is truly within you.

The great news in all is this… that the righteous will never be forsaken and given over to their enemies… as all men will be forced by the sight of the final judgement to see that there is a God, the righteous ruler over the universe. Time will remove doubts, solve difficulties and reveal secrets; meanwhile… faith’s foreseeing eye discerns the truth even now, and rejoices in the midst of any trial.
