PSALM 59 (New King James Version)

To the chief musician. A Michtam of David when Saul sent men, and they watched the house in order to kill him.

  1. Deliver me from my enemies O my God; Defend me from those who rise up against me.
  2. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloodthirsty men.
  3. For look, they lie in wait for my life; The mighty gather against me, not for my transgressions or for my sin, O Lord.
  4. They run and prepare themselves through no fault ofmine. Awake to help me and behold!
  5. You therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, Awake to punish all the nations; do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah
  6. At evening they return, they growl like a dog, and go all around the city.
  7. Indeed they belch with their mouth; swords are in their lips; for they say, ”who hears??”
  8. But You O Lord shall laugh at them; You shall have all the nations in derision.
  9. I will wait for You, O You His strength; for God is my defense.
  10. My God of mercy shall come to meet me; God shall let me see my desire on my enemies.
  11. Do not slay them lest my people forget; scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord our shield.
  12. For the sin of their mouth and the word of their lips, let them even be taken in their pride, and for the cursing and the lying which they speak.
  13. Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be; and let them know that God rules in Jacob to the ends of the earth…Selah
  14. And at evening they return, they growl like a dog and go all around the city.
  15. They wander up and down for food, and howl if they are not satisfied.
  16. But I will sing of Your power; yes I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; for You have been my defense and refuge in my day of trouble.
  17. To You, O my strength, I will sing praises; for God is my defense, My God of Mercy.
I really want you to take note of David’s conduct, and how he truly handles his enemies. I find it interesting that David’s troubles and conflicts have resulted in rich Psalms and songs, prayers and simple cries of the heart for us to hang onto today. Throughout history you’ll see that the great Godly artisans of the world have always brought culture altering works AFTER or DURING great personal trials. In fact, the music of the House of God is in no small degree indebted to the trials of the saints, and the faithfulness of God.

In the original text… this Psalm is titled an ‘altaschith’… meaning, a DESTROY NOT Psalm. What God preserves, satan CANNOT destroy… great promise!!

David appears to be totally trapped in his home, surrounded on all sides by the enemy… hence the cry to God for rescue to a HIGH place, where the enemy CANNOT get hold of Him. When our God is described as a STRONG TOWER… this is where this description is totally right…for when the tides of life are starting to swallow you up, you NEED a strong tower to cling to. The other thing about this Psalm is that continually you should notice David says MY GOD… not an aloof, distant, O DEAR GOD IN HEAVEN… but an intimate, real cry displaying an intimacy and trust with His heavenly Father.

The longer I have known Christ, I have noticed prayer language change a lot…I used to worry that my prayers would not be right, or not be beautiful enough to be heard in the heart of God, I just did not want to disappoint my Saviour with my lack of skill when it came to addressing the Author of life. As time has gone on however, I have learned that the only correct way to approach the Lord in prayer is through honest, heart felt conversations… for Yes, He is Most Holy, but He is also ABBA FATHER… the ultimate Daddy. I hear David’s reliance continually on his DADDY, with whom his real relationship continually is displayed through the scriptures.

Saul was continually being unjust toward David, nothing would have given him more joy than to kill David, but if you remember the last study, I spoke of the one thing the enemy underestimates when he comes against the saints… and that is…THE SAINTS GO TO PPRAYER… Saul had every right to be EXTREMELY nervous as the angel armies gathered to protect this man of God who was confident that he had done no wrong.

Even the fact that David says ARISE God from your sleep… he is simply saying, Father, when all others lay down their heads…You stay awake… in charge, covering Your servant.
You know I pray this all the time with great confidence, especially if I am going through any particular trial… ’Father I thank You that even while we sleep, You are still working on our behalf to make a way where in the natural, there is no way!!!’ Just as you should never go to bed angry with your spouse… I love how this prayer leaves you stress free as you sleep. The bible promises sweet sleep for the righteous!!

He describes the enemies as dogs who prowl the city, looking for their prey… their desperate howls cry out to remind you they are near… but just remember the noise of the enemy is always so pitiful compared to the victorious ROAR of the LORD!!

At about verse 8 the same pattern emerges as we have seen before, David gets stronger in his confession of faith… again declaring HIS GOD as his defence, high tower, the safest place to be in a time of danger. And he finally triumphs at the end of the Psalm with a song… the dogs howl… yet the saints sing!! The song sung is for God alone, and in this case, only those who know the wonder of RESCUE… know the power of a song of gratefulness. The greater the trial, the louder the song should be. David is FULLY aware of the Mercy of God, as there is no hint within this song of himself, or human intervention… no… it is ALL for the Glory of God… no sweeter song has ever been sung!!!

OK wonderful people, I pray the Mercy and Loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ over you all… that at this season, if you are facing trials of any kind, you will know and be confident HOW to overcome…..
