NEW DELHI, INDIA

(ANS) – Dr. H.T. Sangliana, a Christian ex-member of parliament and former Director General of Police for Karnataka State, was appointed as the Vice Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) in New Delhi, India, on Tuesday, December 15.

Dr. H.T. Sangliana

Dr. Sangliana now has the rank of Minister of State and his appointment is for a period of three years.

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities, Mohammed Shafi Qureshi, is a prominent Muslim politician and the founder of the Congress party in Indian administered Kashmir. He currently heads the Commission which comprises of three more members apart from the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson.

Speaking to ANS, Dr. Sangliana said that his priorities would be to “help channel benefits meant for the uplift of all the communities to which the Constitution has accorded minority status”. He added that he has already drawn up a “list of works to be done at the Commission”.

Known as the “Super Cop of Karnataka”, Sangliana carries with him a substantial knowledge of policing and judicial processes and, by virtue of being an ex-MP, he also is aware of the social realities of the country. He is the first Christian leader from the North-East of India to assume this position at the NCM.

A Mizoram state-born Christian, Sangliana was expelled from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a political party of India, after he voted in favor of the India-US nuclear deal during the trust vote against the United Progressive Alliance (an alliance of different parties with the Congress Party) government last year.

H.T. Sangliana was one among the 160 international delegates to join US President Barack Obama at his breakfast table earlier this year at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC.

He is considered to be one of the best police officers in India, known to be courageous man, with unbeatable panache and bravado.

There has never been any allegation of wrongdoing against him and his dealings with people, on both sides of the law, have always been completely transparent.

Dr. H.T. Sangliana out among the Indian people

Sangliana is on good terms with the media and has always been quick to
share the results of his investigations with the media.

His real-life flamboyance has inspired the Kannada film industry to make three films on him and he acted in one of them.

Sangliana is one man who does not fear anyone, or the repercussions (on himself) as a consequence of his actions.

His appointment will be a great help to the Indian minorities as a whole, and especially the Christian community.

Speaking to ANS, Dr. Abraham Mathai, Vice Chairman of Maharashtra State Minority Commission. Said, “I welcome the appointment of Dr. Sangliana as I feel he is the best person suited for the job. His experience in the police force for decades will be an added advantage”.

Pastor Paul Thangiah, Superintendent of Assemblies of God in Karnataka State said, “Dr. Sangliana is a straight-forward, disciplined, God-fearing, people-loving and respected man. He has always believed in God in life. This new responsibility will take him to a new level. On behalf of Christian community, we wish him all the best”

Dr. Sajan. K. George, National President of the Global Council of Indian Christians told ANS, “Dr. Sangliana has a good reputation in the society and he should work up to a good extent especially for the persecuted pastors and believers”.
