Originally from Sydney, Australia, Nixon, the son of Outback missionaries, Les and Martha Nixon, who run Outback Patrol (http://www.outbackpatrol.com.au), has been producing and directing films for the past 30 years…documentaries in Russia, India, and throughout Europe… national commercials for SUBWAY® Restaurants, Nickelodeon, Walt Disney World and Ritz Carlton…feature films such as FIREPROOF, FACING THE GIANTS, and MAKING WAVES.
His success is due to his ability to create classic, elegant images that evoke emotion and induce heartfelt response. David was first called on by Sherwood Pictures in 2004 to produce the wildly successful movie FACING THE GIANTS. By bringing together a small group of Christian technicians with the volunteer help of an entire church, Nixon was able to give a $100,000 project a big screen look, and ultimately garner over $10 million at the box office. After that impressive accomplishment, Sherwood called on David and his team to bring their expertise to their next feature FIREPROOF, which was named the #1 independent film of 2008 and grossed $33.4 million at the box office.
Now David has just finished his latest feature, LETTERS TO GOD, the heartwarming story of an 8-year-old cancer patient who writes letters to God. This feature film, which hits the big screen on April 9th, is presented by Possibility Pictures and will be released nationwide by Vivendi Entertainment. LETTERS TO GOD is DNP (David Nixon Productions) Studios’, fourth feature film, and the first to be released by Possibility Pictures, the company’s movie arm. It was produced entirely in Central Florida with its rich pool of resources, technicians and talent. Directed by David Nixon, best known as one of the producers of FIREPROOF and FACING THE GIANTS, the movie was filmed with the RED Digital Cinema camera by Bob Scott, local Director of Photography (2010 OLYMPIC GAMES, THE EXPRESS, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM) at Universal Studios sound stages and back lot, Arnold Palmer Hospital, Give Kids The World and various locations around Winter Garden. The 100+ production team included DNP Studios staff consisting of Director David Nixon, the movie’s writer and one of the producers, Sandra Thrift (MAKING WAVES, BURIED LIES, SAVING LIVINGSTON, STORYTELLERS), Co-Producer and Unit Production Manager Rob Micai, Editor Patrick Tyler, and Post-Production Supervisor, Daryn Johnson. The principal crew and actors consisted largely of Central Floridians. The ambitious six week shooting schedule wrapped on time, and then editing took place at the DNP Studios facility in Orlando, with their post production team. The rough cut was actually done on-set during the filming of the movie. The final cut was then finished entirely at DNP Studios where all necessary deliverables for nationwide screenings were produced. Nixon said, “We knew that we could make the same kind of Hollywood movies right here in Orlando. Most movie production companies come to Orlando to use the location. They bring in talent and technicians to direct, act and produce, then they go back to LA to finish the movie. But we did it all here with the local film community.” LETTERS TO GOD is a heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption; of what happens when one boy’s walk of faith crosses paths with one man’s search for meaning—the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them. Vivendi Entertainment President Tom O’Malley commented, “I am thrilled to be working with Possibility Pictures on the release of their first feature film. LETTERS TO GOD is a movie that will not only entertain, but inspire audiences everywhere. This is a very special picture.”
LETTERS TO GOD premieres on the evening of Wednesday, March 31st downtown Orlando. The Warren Brothers, musical recording artists that perform the movie’s title song “Dear Mr. God”, will be performing the song live. LETTERS TO GOD stars, Robyn Lively (THE KARATE KID PART III, WILDCATS), Jeffrey S.S. Johnson (HELTER SKELTER, A COAT OF SNOW), Tanner Maguire (SAVING SARAH CAIN, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER), Maree Cheatham (MR. & MRS. SMITH, BEETLEJUICE), Michael Christopher Bolten (HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, THE WOODS HAVE EYES), Bailee Madison (BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA, BROTHERS, the upcoming DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK) and Ralph Waite (THE WALTONS, COOL HAND LUKE). The movie was given a five Dove rating (highest achievable) by the Dove Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage the creation, production, distribution and consumption of family friendly entertainment.
