SANTA ANA, CA

(ANS) – “North Korea is a country close to my heart. Nowhere in the world are Christians persecuted with such hatred and violence. Nowhere are people so misled by the ‘father of the lie’ than in North Korea. I love every North Korean. I pray desperately that they will know that it is not ‘father’ Kim Il-Sung who is taking care of them, but Jesus Christ.” – Brother John

Brother John has supervised the work of Open Doors in North Korea and his words are a reminder of the importance of the annual North Korea Freedom Week (NKFW). NKFW will be held April 25-May 1. The event will have a different look this year because the North Korea Freedom Coalition, which sponsors the event and of which Open Doors is a member, is holding most of the activities with other groups in Seoul, South Korea, instead of Washington D.C., as in the past.

As a result, Open Doors is hosting a month-long Internet campaign to support believers in North Korea. The campaign starts today and goes through North Korea Freedom Week.

The campaign will be twofold – through the Open Doors website and social media.

With the verse “For where two or more are gathered in my name, there I will be also” (Matthew 18:20) in mind, prayer events are a focus of this year’s campaign. By going to the Open Doors USA website at www.OpenDoorsUSA.org, people can learn how to host a prayer event dedicated to lifting up their North Korean brothers and sisters and also let them know they have not been forgotten in their time of need.

North Korean defectors who have escaped to South Korea specifically have asked that Open Doors supporters host prayer events during NKFW because prayer is the most important way we can support those who suffer. Individuals can register their prayer events on the Open Doors website or find events being hosted in their area. To register or attend prayer events, individuals should go to www.OpenDoorsUSA.org.

Those who join the social media campaign will be able to participate through prayer, emails, e-cards and radio “messages of hope” to North Korean believers. Those who use the Open Doors website will be able to do many of the same things, as well as view videos and download a prayer guide for North Korea.

“This is such an important time of the year – a time when we can pray and actively help those who are suffering in North Korea,” said Carl Moeller, President/CEO of Open Doors USA. “North Korea is a living nightmare. It has been ranked No. 1 on the Open Doors World Watch List of the world’s worst persecutors for good reason. Please join us in participating in this vital campaign.”

Brother John added: “What North Korean Christians know is that thousands of people pray every day for them. We told them that. That encourages them in a way that is indescribable.”

An estimated 100 million Christians worldwide suffer interrogation, arrest and even death for their faith in Christ, with millions more facing discrimination and alienation. Open Doors supports and strengthens believers in the world’s most difficult areas through Bible and Christian literature distribution, leadership training and assistance, Christian community development, prayer and presence ministry and advocacy on behalf of suffering believers.
