Who’s a Fool?

Posted by

In the book of Proverbs, chapter 26, the reader may see a noticeable repetition of a word rendered to a person with little or no prudence in his life : fool. This nickname, we can consider, pop up again and again against a chiding context by the writer for this so-called fool.

So, what makes a fool?

Deriving from this chapter, there are several mannerisms :

Chapter 3 :
“A whip for the horse, a halter for the donkey,
and a rod for the backs of fools!”
-> A fool is juxtaposed with a horse and a donkey, animals reputed for their belligerence and occasional obstinance), and so a fool is one with similar traits.

Chapter 7 :
“Like a lame man’s legs that hang limp
is a proverb in the mouth of a fool. ”
someone who fails to use a proverb (this probably means the person doesn’t know how to use a proverb properly, according to its context or according to a person’s credibility)

Chapter 11 :
“As a dog returns to its vomit,
so a fool repeats his folly.”
-> Repeats his folly

These are points I’ve unearthed so far…

So, looking at the mentioned traits, do we display any of them in our life? If we do, let us humbly confess, repent and be changed from our infirmities. Amen.

So, looking at the mentioned traits, do we display any of them in our life? If we do, let us humbly confess them to God, repent and be changed from our infirmities. Amen.
